Best Clip-On Guitar Tuner: Peterson StroboClip
The one I keep clipped to a headstock is the Peterson StroboClip HDC. It is also the one I would talk about half of you out of buying, so let me do both jobs in the same article.
Why clip-on at all
A clip-on tuner reads the vibration of the wood instead of listening through a microphone. That single difference is the whole argument for owning one. In a quiet room a phone app is fine. On a stage, in a rehearsal space, or anywhere a drummer exists, a microphone tuner spends its time trying to tune the room, while a clip keeps reading your instrument and nothing else.
It is also the only kind of tuner that works on an unplugged electric without you having to be quiet about it.
What makes the Peterson different
Most clip-on tuners tell you within about a cent whether you are sharp or flat. Peterson guarantees 0.1 cent. That is a real engineering difference and, honestly, well past what your ear can resolve on a single note.
The precision matters for a second-order reason. When you are checking intonation, setting a new nut, or chasing a chord that sounds sour while every open string reads green, a tuner that is merely close enough will happily confirm a wrong answer. The strobe display keeps moving until you are actually there, and that is when you find out your third string has been slightly off for a month.
The feature I did not expect to care about is Sweetened Tunings. The HDC ships with over 65 of them. They are small deliberate offsets per instrument and playing style, and they exist because equal temperament is a compromise: a guitar tuned perfectly by the numbers still has chords that sound slightly wrong, and open G is the usual suspect. The guitar presets nudge individual strings a few cents to make the shapes you actually play sound better. Turn it on and your open chords stop fighting each other.
The HDC part of the name is the rechargeable one. Lithium battery, USB-C, roughly six hours of tuning per charge. The plain StroboClip HD is the same tuner with a coin cell and about fifty Sweetened Tunings instead of sixty-five.
When you should not buy this
If you have been playing for three months and your goal is to get through a song without the guitar sounding wrong, a $15 clip-on will do that. It will be accurate to a cent, which is not audible on a strummed chord, and you will spend the difference on strings and lessons instead. That is the better trade.
Buy the Peterson when one of these becomes true: you set up your own guitars, you play in alternate tunings often enough to want presets, you own several instruments and are tired of a tuner that only really understands one of them, or you have reached the point where a chord sounding slightly off bothers you and you cannot tell why.
That last one is the real trigger. It is the moment a precise tuner stops being a luxury and starts being a diagnostic tool.
What to look for in any clip-on
Read the accuracy spec in cents, and be suspicious when a listing does not print one. Check that the display rotates or is readable from above, because a tuner you have to crane your neck around is a tuner you stop using. Look at the clamp, since a hard plastic jaw with no padding will eventually leave a mark on a nitro finish.
Chromatic is worth insisting on. A tuner locked to standard EADGBE becomes useless the first time you try drop D, and a chromatic one simply reads whatever note you give it.
The free option, honestly

Are clip-on guitar tuners accurate?
Most are accurate to within about one cent, which is more than enough for normal playing since a cent is not audible on a strummed chord. Both, and on bass, ukulele, mandolin, and violin as well. Because a clip reads the vibration of the wood rather than a pickup signal, it works on an unplugged electric just as well as an acoustic, which is the main reason to keep one in the case.

A strobe tuner shows pitch as a moving band that slows to a standstill when the note is exactly right, rather than a needle that settles somewhere near the middle. You do not need one to play in tune. It earns its price when you set up your own instruments, use alternate tunings regularly, or want the instrument-specific offsets that make open chords stop sounding slightly sour.
