Ionian, Lydian, and Mixolydian
Direct answer
Ionian is the major scale. Lydian is major with sharp 4. Mixolydian is major with flat 7. All three have a major 3, so the home chord stays major while one note changes the sound.
Common mix-up: A lick does not become Lydian or Mixolydian because it starts on a certain fret. The chord underneath must keep the root at home and support the changed note.
Ionian is your reference
Ionian gives you familiar major-key movement. I feels finished, IV moves away, V adds tension, and 7 pulls back to 1. Hear that first so Lydian and Mixolydian have something clear to push against.
A plain major chord or I-IV-V progression usually points to Ionian unless the song keeps stressing a modal note or chord.
Lydian floats; Mixolydian leans
Lydian's sharp 4 removes the half-step rub between the major 3 and perfect 4. A I-II major vamp puts that note in plain sight. Mixolydian's flat 7 removes the leading tone and sits naturally over a dominant I7 or I-flat VII move.
Aim for the changed note, then resolve to a chord tone. If you can hear why the note belongs over the chord, it will sound intentional.

The Beatles — “Let It Be”
In C major. The piano intro and vocal melody keep returning to C, so the unaltered major scale sounds settled rather than modal.
Joe Satriani — “Flying in a Blue Dream”
The melody sits over a C major sound but repeatedly leans on F sharp. Track that raised 4 against the C chord.
Grateful Dead — “Fire on the Mountain”
The B to A vamp keeps B as home while the A chord supplies the flat 7. That is the Mixolydian move in two chords.
