Chapter 5 of 12 · Part 2: Scales before modes
Pentatonic and blues: the box you already know
Direct answer
Minor pentatonic gives you a sturdy five-note frame: 1 flat 3 4 5 flat 7. Add 2 and flat 6 for natural minor, 2 and natural 6 for Dorian, or flat 5 for the blues scale.
Common mix-up: Pentatonic boxes are part of the theory, not a separate shortcut. Add the missing degrees and the box becomes a clear route into modes.
Keep the box and add the evidence
A minor pentatonic gives A, C, D, E, and G. The missing 2 and 6 carry a lot of the modal information. Add B and F for Aeolian. Swap F for F-sharp and you have Dorian.
The blues scale takes a different turn by slipping E-flat, the flat 5, between D and E. That note is great tension, but it does not turn the six-note blues scale into a seven-note mode.
A color note needs context
Hold the added note long enough to hear it against A. F sounds dark and settled inside natural minor; F-sharp creates Dorian's lift. Slide through E-flat in blues, then resolve to D or E.
Do not spray every scale tone evenly. Phrase from the familiar pentatonic skeleton and feature one added note on a strong beat.

Songs built from pentatonic and blues sounds
Jimi Hendrix — “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”
The main guitar language comes from E minor pentatonic. Hendrix bends through the flat 5 instead of treating it as a resting note.
Stevie Ray Vaughan — “Pride and Joy”
Vaughan mixes major and minor blues vocabulary over a dominant shuffle. Listen for phrases that slide between the flat 3 and major 3.
The Allman Brothers Band — “Blue Sky”
The lead guitars spend long stretches in E major pentatonic. Listen for the major 3rd and 6th in the harmonized lines.

Pentatonic and blues FAQ
Which mode is closest to minor pentatonic?
Several minor modes contain it. Aeolian adds 2 and flat 6; Dorian adds 2 and natural 6; Phrygian adds flat 2 and flat 6.
Is the blues scale a mode?
No. It is usually minor pentatonic plus a chromatic flat 5. Modes in this course are seven-note collections organized around a tonal center.
What is a color note?
A color note is a degree that makes one scale or mode distinct in context, such as Dorian's natural 6 or blues' flat 5.
