The Best Guitar Picks: Why the Jazz III (Matt Heafy Signature) Win for Speed and Control

by OpenFret Team

Picks are personal, but if I had to hand one shape to a player who wants speed and accuracy, it's the Jazz III. The version I keep in every case is the Dunlop Matt Heafy Custom Max-Grip Jazz III, a small, sharp, grippy pick that gets out of the way and lets your hand move.

Why the Jazz III

A Jazz III is smaller than a standard pick and comes to a sharper point. That combination is why technical players love it. Less pick sticking out past your fingers means less of it flapping and catching, so your alternate picking gets tighter and faster, and the sharp tip gives you a clean, articulate attack on single notes.

The Matt Heafy version adds the two things that make it my default. It uses Dunlop's Max-Grip textured surface, so it stays put even when your hands sweat, which is where smooth picks start spinning around. And it's a custom 1.38mm nylon blend that's stiff enough for a precise attack while keeping a little give, instead of the glassy rigidity of some thick picks. The kanji embossing is a nice touch, and it comes in a six-pack, which you'll want, because small picks are easy to lose.

Pick thickness and shape, quickly

Thin picks flex a lot and suit loose acoustic strumming. Thicker, pointed picks give you control and articulation for lead lines and riffs, which is why the 1.38mm Jazz III is aimed at that style. If you mostly strum chords on an acoustic, a bigger standard 351 shape in a medium gauge will feel more natural, and there's nothing wrong with keeping a couple of shapes around for different jobs. If you want something to play those chords over, our strumming patterns guide is a good start.

Why it matters for Guitar Quest

A clean, consistent attack gives the app a clearer note to read. A pick that slips in your fingers produces uneven, glancing hits, and those are the notes that get missed when you're playing Guitar Quest and the app is detecting what you play. A grippy, pointed pick like the Jazz III makes your picking more deliberate, which carries straight into better detection and cleaner runs:
