The TONE3000 Plugin Is Free, and It Is the Best Amp Tone You Can Put on a Computer

On September 1, 2026, TONE3000 released their own plugin. It costs nothing, the source is MIT licensed on GitHub, and it installs a standalone app, so you do not need a DAW, a licence manager, or a trial that expires while you are still deciding whether you like it. Plug a guitar into an interface, open the app, and you have a rig.

I have avoided writing a “best free amp sim” piece for a while because the honest answer used to involve six downloads and a folder structure. That answer changed in one afternoon.

What it actually is

It is a player for Neural Amp Modeler captures with the whole TONE3000 library wired into it. Over 700,000 tones: amp and cab pairs, heads on their own, cabinets, pedals, outboard gear, real rooms, and a long tail of things people captured because they could, like broken radios and toys. You browse inside the plugin, click a tone, and play it.

The old workflow was worse than it sounds. You went to the site, found a capture, downloaded a .nam file, put it somewhere you would remember, then pointed a separate plugin at it, and repeated that every time you wanted to try a different amp. Nothing about that is hard. All of it is friction, and friction is what stops people from ever finding a sound they like.

The formats cover everything you might need later. TONE3000 ships standalone, VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP on macOS, standalone, VST3, AAX and CLAP on Windows, and standalone, VST3, LV2 and CLAP on Linux. Logic, Reaper, Ableton, Pro Tools, Bitwig, FL Studio, Studio One, Cubase and Ardour are all covered.

Why it sounds the way it does

The engine is NAM A2, which landed in June 2026. TONE3000 built it with Steve Atkinson, who wrote the original Neural Amp Modeler, and it is a real jump rather than a version number. It represents the sag of a fuzz under a heavy chord and the way a tube amp blooms when you push it, and it does that while using less CPU than the architecture it replaces.

The claim that got everyone's attention came with it. TONE3000 ran a blind listening test using the MUSHRA method: more than a thousand people, over a hundred thousand ratings, digital models against the real recorded gear. NAM A2 came out ahead of Neural DSP Neural Capture V2, IK Multimedia ToneX V2 and Line 6 Proxy by a margin nobody was expecting from the free option. TONE3000 built the thing they tested, which is worth remembering, though they did publish the test code and the raw ratings, which is more than most companies do with a marketing number. What you need to run it

A guitar or bass, a cable, an audio interface with an instrument input, and headphones. That is the whole list. The interface does not have to be nice: an eighteen dollar JOYO gets a clean signal into the computer, and a capture of a five thousand dollar amp does not care what carried it there.

A free account matters for one thing only: loading tones out of the library, since the model files come off their servers. Everything else runs offline, and captures already sitting on your drive load without signing in.

Three settings worth changing first

Run at 48 kHz. The plugin works at any sample rate and is lightest there. Set the buffer to 128 samples in Settings, System Settings; if you get crackles, go back up to 256 and accept a hair more delay. And start on A2-Lite rather than A2-Full. Lite is the variant built to run on cheap hardware, it sounds close, and it leaves your laptop enough headroom to do something else at the same time. Switch to Full when you are recording and the CPU is not doing anything else.

If you want the captures to sit at the level they were trained at, calibration is in Settings, Plugin Settings. You enter the dBu that matches your interface's maximum digital level, typically +12 dBu for professional gear and +4 dBu for semi-pro. It is a two minute job and it stops every high gain capture from arriving either limp or exploding.

The chain builder is the part people underrate

You can stack blocks without a sensible limit, so a fuzz into a studio preamp into a water tank is a real thing you can build on a Tuesday. Stereo is properly supported: stereo input, a widener, dual chains, auto-align and auto-balance so the two sides do not fight each other. There is parametric EQ before and after any block plus a global one, MIDI mapping for a foot controller, oversampling, per-block normalization, and a tuner, which is a funny thing to find in a free plugin and a welcome one.

Practicing through it while something listens to you play

This is the reason the plugin ended up on a guitar learning site. The standalone app takes your guitar off the interface and sends an amp sound to your headphones. It does not need to own the interface exclusively to do that, which means a browser can open the same input at the same time. You get the tone in your ears and note detection on the screen, from one cable.

The setup, in order:

  1. Plug the guitar into the interface and the headphones into the interface, not the laptop.
  2. Open the TONE3000 standalone app, pick the interface as input and output, and load a tone you like.
  3. Open Guitar Quest in a browser and choose the same interface in the audio input picker. It prefers an interface over a laptop mic already, and it turns off echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain, all of which mangle a guitar signal.
  4. Play. Both are hearing the same string at the same time.

On a Mac that is the whole story, because CoreAudio is happy to hand the same input to two programs. On Windows there is one catch worth knowing before you blame the browser: an ASIO driver usually claims the device exclusively, so whichever app opens it first wins and the other gets silence. In the standalone app's audio settings, pick the shared Windows Audio driver instead of ASIO. Latency goes up slightly. Both apps get to listen.

Leave the detection on the dry signal rather than routing the amp sound back into it. It works either way, but a wall of gain generates harmonics that make one note look a lot like a chord, and detection gets more generous than you want when you are trying to find out whether you actually hit the note.

Where a great tone stops helping

A rig gives you a sound. It does not give you a plan, and this is the quiet trap in gear that is this good and this free: you can spend a month auditioning captures and finish the month playing exactly what you played before, only louder and in better clothes. Ask anyone who owns a modeler.

What fixes that is boring and it is the same thing it has always been. Practice something specific, find out whether you played it, do it again tomorrow. Can I use the TONE3000 plugin for bass?

Yes, and the library is one of the better places to find bass tone. The captures cover bass heads, cabinets and pedals as well as guitar rigs, and NAM A2 handles the low end without the flubbiness older neural models had. Filter the library by bass and you will find more Ampeg and Darkglass than you can work through.

Can I practice with a guitar app while the plugin is running?

On macOS, yes, with no extra software: CoreAudio lets the standalone app and your browser open the same interface input at once, so you hear the amp in your headphones while the browser hears the dry signal and grades your playing. On Windows an ASIO driver usually takes the device exclusively, so switch the standalone app to the shared Windows Audio driver first.

Is NAM better than ToneX or Neural Capture?

In the blind listening test TONE3000 ran for the A2 launch, more than 1,000 people rated NAM A2 above Neural DSP Neural Capture V2, IK Multimedia ToneX V2 and Line 6 Proxy. TONE3000 built A2, so read the result with that in mind, though they published the test code and the raw ratings. In practice the capture itself matters more than the format it is stored in.
