CorOS 4.1.0 Is the Biggest Quad Cortex Update Yet: What Is Actually In It
Neural DSP shipped CorOS 4.1.0 on August 25, 2026 for the Quad Cortex and the Quad Cortex mini, and called it the biggest CorOS update to date. Companies say that about every release. This time the claim mostly holds, though not for the reason the headline features suggest.
It is free, and it covers both units.
Device Presets, which is the actual news
Until now a preset on a Quad Cortex meant the whole rig. If you spent twenty minutes dialling in a delay you loved, that delay lived inside that one preset, and getting it into another one meant doing the work again or copying blocks around.
A Device Preset stores the settings of a single Virtual Device. Your delay is now a thing you saved, and you drop it into any rig you build. Neural DSP included more than 2,000 factory Device Presets for amps, cabs, effects and utility blocks, so there is a sane starting point on every device rather than a flat set of defaults.
This is the kind of change that does not photograph well and quietly removes an hour of tedium a week from anyone who builds their own presets.
Eight new devices
Free for every Quad Cortex and Quad Cortex mini owner, and the list is weirder than the usual firmware drop:
- Multivoicer, a harmonizer
- Glitch, a granular delay
- Ring Modulator
- Arpeggio Delay
- Crystal Delay
- Vintage Digital Reverb
- Douglas Shining, a compressor
- Parametric-4, an EQ
Granular and arpeggiated delays on a unit that mostly gets bought for high gain amp tones is a good sign about who is choosing the roadmap. The Vintage Digital Reverb is the one I would reach for first, because early digital reverb is having a moment and nothing in the stock set covered it.
Every X plugin now runs on the hardware
CorOS 4.1.0 adds Archetype: John Mayer X, Petrucci X, Misha Mansoor X, Rabea X and Tim Henson X to the plugins the Quad Cortex can load natively. That completes the set: every X-updated Neural DSP plugin now runs on the hardware, adding more than 70 amps, cabs and effects for people who already own the licences.
Worth being clear about what that means, because the marketing is fuzzy. You still buy the plugins separately. What you get is the ability to run devices you already paid for on the floor unit, mixed with native CorOS blocks and your own Neural Captures, instead of only in a DAW.
The rest
Stomp mode gets dual footswitch assignments, so one switch can do two jobs, which matters most on the mini where switches are scarce. Cortex Control 4.1.0 can manage several units from one computer, which is a studio and backline feature rather than a bedroom one. The usual performance and stability work is in there too.
Is it worth buying a Quad Cortex over this?
If you already own one, update it and enjoy the Device Presets. If you are deciding whether to buy, this update does not change the maths much, and the maths got more interesting this year from a different direction.
Neural DSP's own Neural Capture was one of the capture engines that came second in the blind listening test TONE3000 published in June 2026, behind free open-source NAM A2. A month later the TONE3000 plugin made 700,000 captures playable from a standalone app on any laptop for nothing. What the Quad Cortex still owns is the floor. It boots into your rig without a laptop, it survives being kicked, it captures your own amp in a room with no computer, and it is an 8-in 8-out interface when you get home. That is what the money buys, and this update makes living with it noticeably less annoying.
Plug it into something that listens
Because the Quad Cortex is also your audio interface, it goes straight into Guitar Quest over USB. You practice through your captured amp while note detection grades what you played, so all that tone work ends up attached to fretboard drills rather than sitting in a preset you admire occasionally.
