Ab Aeolian Mode

Ab–Bb–Cb–Db–Eb–Fb–Gb · root also written G#

Ab Aeolian is the 6th mode of the B major scale: Ab–Bb–Cb–Db–Eb–Fb–Gb. Its character: dark, emotional, and melancholic — identical to natural minor.

"Aeolian" is the modal name for the natural minor scale — identical notes and shapes. The flat 3rd, flat 6th, and flat 7th create the classic minor sound. Aeolian is the natural minor scale named as a mode, commonly used in modal contexts. Thinking of it as the 6th mode of B major is what unlocks the fretboard: every B major shape you know is also an Ab Aeolian shape.

Because every mode of B major shares the same seven notes, any B major fretboard shape works for Ab Aeolian — what changes is the note you resolve to. Loop a Abm vamp or a backing track that stays on Ab, keep resolving your phrases to Ab, and the Aeolian color comes through. You'll hear this sound in rock, metal, pop and classical.

Ab Aeolian is mode 6 of B Major — same seven notes, resolved to Ab instead. It’s note-for-note identical to the Ab minor scale, covered in full in the scale library.

Ab Aeolian Mode FAQ

What is the Ab Aeolian mode?

Ab Aeolian is the 6th mode of the B major scale — the same seven notes starting from Ab: Ab–Bb–Cb–Db–Eb–Fb–Gb. The interval formula is R–2–♭3–4–5–♭6–♭7.

Is Ab Aeolian the same as Ab natural minor?

Yes — identical notes, identical shapes. "Aeolian" is the modal name for the natural minor scale, used when treating it as one of the seven modes of B major rather than as a key of its own.

What chords work with Ab Aeolian?

The seven chords of the parent B major scale, reordered to start from Ab: Abm (i), Bb° (ii°), B (♭III), Dbm (iv), Ebm (v), E (♭VI), F# (♭VII). A two-chord vamp between Abm and F# is the classic way to establish the Aeolian sound without drifting back to the parent key.

What major scale has the same notes as Ab Aeolian?

B major. Ab Aeolian uses exactly the notes of B major starting from its 6th degree, so every B major shape on the fretboard doubles as a Ab Aeolian shape. The same notes also spell B Ionian, Db Dorian, Eb Phrygian, E Lydian, F# Mixolydian, and Bb Locrian.

How do I practice the Ab Aeolian mode?

Modes live and die by harmonic context — run over a static Abm vamp or a drone on Ab, not a full progression that pulls back to the parent key. Play the B major shapes you already know, resolve every phrase to Ab, and lean on the flat 6th (Fb). OpenFret's free Studio has a fretboard viewer and metronome for exactly this, and Guitar Quest turns scale practice into a game with real-time pitch detection.
